Hadith Shafi'i
Hadith master of Nishapur, compiler of al-Mustadrak.
Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim studied with some two thousand teachers and became the leading hadith scholar of Khurasan. He served briefly as a judge, which gave him the title al-Hakim.
His al-Mustadrak 'ala al-Sahihayn gathers hadith he judged to meet the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim but which they had not included. Later critics, especially al-Dhahabi, found him too lenient in many of his gradings. His Ma'rifat 'Ulum al-Hadith is an early handbook of the hadith sciences.
