Fiqh Hadith
Son of Zayn al-'Abidin, called al-Baqir, 'the one who splits open knowledge'.
Muhammad ibn 'Ali was the son of Zayn al-'Abidin, and his mother was a granddaughter of al-Hasan, so he descended from the Prophet ﷺ through both grandsons. He was a small child at Karbala and grew up in Madinah among the last of the Companions, including Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah.
He was called al-Baqir, 'the one who splits open knowledge', for the depth of his learning. He narrated hadith and taught fiqh in Madinah, and scholars such as al-Zuhri and al-Awza'i narrated from him. His son Ja'far al-Sadiq carried on his teaching.
