Great scholar of Madinah, from whom Imam Malik narrated and with whom Abu Hanifa is reported to have studied.
Ja'far was the son of Muhammad al-Baqir. His mother, Umm Farwah, was a great-granddaughter of Abu Bakr, and he is reported to have said, 'Abu Bakr gave birth to me twice.' He was given the title al-Sadiq, 'the truthful', and he taught in Madinah for decades.
Sunni scholars honour him as a leading jurist and narrator of hadith. Imam Malik narrated from him and described his devotion, Abu Hanifa is reported to have attended his circle, and Sufyan al-Thawri and Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah were among his students. He is also regarded as an Imam in Shi'i tradition.
