At Leran near Gresik in east Java stands the gravestone of Fatimah binti Maimun, dated 475 AH (1082). Inscribed in Arabic, it is the oldest known Muslim grave in Java and shows that Muslims lived on the coast long before the rise of Muslim kingdoms there.
