Kedah's ruler embraces Islam, by tradition
c. 531 AH · c. 1136 CE
According to the Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa, the ruler of Kedah embraced Islam in 1136 at the hands of a scholar from Yemen and took the name Sultan Muzaffar Shah. Most historians date Kedah's conversion to the 15th century, but the tradition is an important part of the state's own history.
