زيد بن ثابت

Zayd ibn Thabit (RA)

Also known as: Zaid bin Thabit

c. 11 BH – c. 45 AH · c. 611–c. 665 CE

Companions

Scribe of the revelation, who gathered the Quran under Abu Bakr and led the copying under 'Uthman.

Zayd was a boy of the Ansar in Madinah who had memorised many surahs when the Prophet ﷺ arrived. He became one of the main scribes who wrote down the revelation, and at the Prophet's request he learned to read and write the script of the Jews of Madinah within weeks.

After many reciters were killed at the Battle of Yamamah, Abu Bakr entrusted him with gathering the Quran into a single written collection. He later said moving a mountain would have been easier. Under 'Uthman he led the committee that prepared the standard copies. He was also a leading authority on inheritance law.
