Guardian of Maryam, granted a son, Yahya, in his old age.

Zakariyya was a prophet of the Children of Israel and the guardian of Maryam, the mother of 'Isa. Whenever he entered her prayer chamber (mihrab) he found provision with her, and she told him it was from Allah. Moved by this, he called on his Lord in secret. He was old and his wife was barren, yet he asked for a righteous heir.

The angels gave him the glad tidings of a son named Yahya, a name given to no one before him. As a sign, he could not speak to people for three days except by gestures.
