Thrown into a well by his brothers, he rose to govern the storehouses of Egypt.
As a boy, Yusuf dreamed that eleven stars, the sun and the moon prostrated to him. His jealous brothers threw him into a well, and he was sold into slavery in Egypt. In the house of the 'Aziz he resisted the advances of his master's wife and was sent to prison, where he interpreted the dreams of two fellow prisoners and called them to the worship of Allah alone.
When the king dreamed of seven fat cows eaten by seven lean ones, Yusuf interpreted the dream and was put in charge of Egypt's storehouses through the years of famine. His brothers came seeking grain; he revealed himself, forgave them, and brought his parents to Egypt. The Quran tells his story in a single surah and calls it 'the best of stories' (12:3).
