Hadith Shafi'i
Makkah scholar of Padang descent, known as "musnid al-dunya" for his chains of transmission.
Yasin al-Fadani was born in Makkah to a family from Padang in west Sumatra, and studied at the Sawlatiyyah school and with the scholars of the Haram. When the Dar al-'Ulum al-Diniyyah school was founded in Makkah for students from the Malay world, he joined it and later became its director.
He gathered chains of transmission (asanid) for the books of hadith and the other sciences from hundreds of teachers, and was called musnid al-dunya, the greatest holder of chains of his time. He recorded them in works such as al-'Iqd al-Farid, and he also wrote on fiqh, its principles and astronomy. Students from Indonesia, Malaysia and the wider Muslim world came to him for his teaching and his licences (ijazah).
