Isra'il, father of the twelve tribes, a model of 'beautiful patience' in grief.
Ya'qub, also called Isra'il, was the son of Ishaq. His twelve sons became the ancestors of the tribes of the Children of Israel (Banu Isra'il). The Quran presents him as the model of 'beautiful patience' (sabr jamil). He lost his beloved son Yusuf, and later his youngest son (named Binyamin in tradition), and his grief took his sight, but he never despaired of Allah's mercy.
He was reunited with Yusuf in Egypt, and his sight returned when Yusuf's shirt was cast over his face. On his deathbed he asked his sons whom they would worship after him. They answered: your God, the God of your fathers Ibrahim, Isma'il and Ishaq (2:133).
