Fiqh Shafi'i

Syrian jurist whose comparative encyclopedia of fiqh is widely used, including in Malaysia.

Wahbah al-Zuhayli was born in Dayr 'Atiyah, north of Damascus, and studied at the Sharia college in Damascus before going to Egypt, where he studied at al-Azhar and took a doctorate in law from Cairo University. He then taught at the University of Damascus for half a century and was a visiting professor in many countries.

His al-Fiqh al-Islami wa Adillatuh sets out the rulings of the four schools side by side with their evidence and is used by students, muftis and courts across the Muslim world; its Malay translation, Fiqh dan Perundangan Islam, is widely read in Malaysia. He also wrote Usul al-Fiqh al-Islami and a Quran commentary, al-Tafsir al-Munir.
