Prophets Prophethood debated
Named once in the Quran; often linked with the man whom Allah caused to die for a hundred years.
'Uzair is named once in the Quran (9:30), in a verse that rejects a claim some made about him. He is usually identified with the Biblical Ezra, the scribe who restored the Torah to the Children of Israel after the Babylonian exile.
Many commentators connect him with the man in 2:259 who passed by a ruined town and wondered how Allah could bring it back to life. Allah caused him to die for a hundred years and then raised him, and showed him his donkey's bones being clothed with flesh. Scholars differ on whether he was a prophet; a hadith in Sunan Abi Dawud reports the Prophet ﷺ saying that he did not know whether 'Uzair was a prophet or not.
