Da'wah Shafi'i Sufism

Wali Songo scholar who founded Kudus and its Menara mosque, known for respecting local customs.

Ja'far Shadiq, known as Sunan Kudus, served the Sultanate of Demak as imam of its great mosque and as a commander. He then founded a new town which he named al-Quds, after Jerusalem, today Kudus in central Java.

His mosque there, with its minaret built of red brick in the style of a Hindu-Javanese temple, bears a date of 956 AH (1549). He is remembered for his respect for the customs of his Hindu neighbours: he is said to have asked Muslims in Kudus not to slaughter cows, which Hindus honoured, a custom many there still keep. He was known as the 'wali of knowledge' for his learning in fiqh and hadith.
