Da'wah Shafi'i Sufism
Wali Songo scholar whose school at Giri sent teachers as far as Lombok, Sulawesi and Maluku.
Sunan Giri, born Raden Paku, studied with Sunan Ampel in Surabaya and, by tradition, travelled to Pasai and Makkah. He founded his school at Giri, on a hill above Gresik, which became both a centre of learning and a small religious state, Giri Kedaton.
Students and teachers from Giri carried Islam east to Madura, Lombok, Sulawesi and the Maluku islands, and its leaders were consulted by Muslim rulers in Java for generations. Children's songs and games used in teaching, such as Cublak-Cublak Suweng, are traditionally credited to him.
