Rulers Gowa-Tallo Sultanate
Sultan of Gowa who defended Makassar against the Dutch, the 'Rooster of the East'.
Sultan Hasanuddin, grandson of Sultan Alauddin, ruled Gowa as the Dutch East India Company sought a monopoly over the spice trade of eastern Indonesia. He refused to close Makassar to other traders, and from 1666 fought the Company and its ally Arung Palakka of Bone.
He was forced to sign the Treaty of Bongaya in 1667, and after the fall of the fortress of Somba Opu in 1669 he gave up the throne. The Dutch called him the 'Rooster of the East' for his courage. He is a national hero of Indonesia.
