Rulers Gowa-Tallo Sultanate
The first Muslim king of Gowa, who embraced Islam in 1605 and spread it among the Bugis kingdoms.
Sultan Alauddin became king of Gowa in south Sulawesi as a child. In 1605, with his chief minister Karaeng Matoaya of Tallo, he embraced Islam through the preacher Datuk ri Bandang, and Gowa-Tallo became a Muslim sultanate.
In the following years Gowa's campaigns brought the Bugis kingdoms of Bone, Wajo and Soppeng into Islam by 1611. Makassar grew into a great open port, a refuge for traders shut out by the Dutch spice monopoly.
