Rulers Mataram Sultanate

The greatest ruler of Mataram, who united most of Java and created the Javanese Islamic calendar.

Sultan Agung ruled Mataram from 1613 and brought most of Java under its rule, taking Surabaya in 1625. Twice, in 1628 and 1629, he besieged the Dutch at Batavia, without success.

In 1633 he created the Javanese calendar, which follows the Hijri lunar months while continuing the old Saka count of years, joining Islamic and Javanese tradition. In 1641 envoys he sent to Makkah brought back the title of Sultan. He was buried at Imogiri, the royal cemetery he built, and is a national hero of Indonesia.
