Rulers Banten Sultanate
Banten's greatest sultan, who resisted the Dutch and made Shaykh Yusuf al-Maqassari his adviser.
Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa ruled Banten at its height, when its port traded with Europe, Persia, India and China and new canals irrigated its rice fields. He resisted the Dutch East India Company's efforts to control Banten's trade.
He welcomed the scholar Shaykh Yusuf al-Maqassari, who married his daughter and became his adviser. In 1680 his son, known as Sultan Haji, took power with Dutch support; in the war that followed, Sultan Ageng was captured in 1683 and died a prisoner in Batavia. He is a national hero of Indonesia.
