Prophets Named in the Quran

Sent to the people of Madyan, who cheated in weights and measures.

Shu'ayb was sent to the people of Madyan, a trading people who gave short measure and short weight and spread corruption in the land. He called them to worship Allah alone and to deal justly in trade. His people mocked his prayers and threatened to expel him and the believers unless they returned to the old religion. In tradition he is called 'the preacher of the prophets' (khatib al-anbiya') for his eloquence.

In the end his people were seized by an earthquake and a mighty blast. Many commentators identify Madyan with the 'companions of the thicket' (ashab al-aykah) also mentioned in the Quran, while others treat them as a separate people to whom he was also sent.

Draft, awaiting scholarly review.
Some commentators identify him with the old man of Madyan whose daughter married Musa (28:23–28); Ibn Kathir and others reject this. Left out of the bio for that reason.
