شمس الدين الرملي

Shams al-Din al-Ramli (RH)

Also known as: al-Ramli, al-Shafi'i al-Saghir

919–1004 AH · 1513–1596 CE

Fiqh Shafi'i

'The younger Shafi'i', whose Nihayat al-Muhtaj is the main Shafi'i reference in Egypt.

Shams al-Din Muhammad al-Ramli studied with his father Shihab al-Din al-Ramli, a student of Zakariyya al-Ansari, and became the leading Shafi'i authority of Ottoman Cairo, so respected that he was called 'the younger Shafi'i'.

His Nihayat al-Muhtaj, also a commentary on al-Nawawi's Minhaj, stands beside al-Haytami's Tuhfah as one of the two principal references for the school's settled positions. Where the two differ, Egyptian scholars usually follow al-Ramli.
