Also known as: Shah Wali Allah

1114–1176 AH · 1703–1762 CE

Hadith Hanafi Sufism Fiqh

Scholar of Delhi who revived hadith study in India, author of Hujjat Allah al-Balighah.

Shah Waliullah succeeded his father as head of the Madrasa Rahimiyya in Delhi. After studying hadith in Madinah he returned to place hadith at the centre of learning in India, which shaped later South Asian scholarship.

His Hujjat Allah al-Balighah explains the wisdom and purposes behind the rulings of the Shari'ah. He translated the Quran into Persian, then the language of educated Indians, and sought to reconcile the schools of law and the different trends in Sufism. Most of the major schools of later South Asian Islam trace their scholarly lineage through him and his sons.
