Rulers Aceh Sultanate

Queen of Aceh for 34 years, patron of al-Raniri and al-Singkili, and first of its four sultanahs.

Safiatuddin, daughter of Iskandar Muda, became ruler of Aceh in 1641 on the death of her husband, Sultan Iskandar Thani. She reigned for 34 years, keeping Aceh independent as the Dutch took Melaka and pressed on its trade, and three more queens followed her until 1699.

She was a patron of scholars. Nur al-Din al-Raniri served at her court in its first years, and 'Abd al-Ra'uf al-Singkili wrote Mir'at al-Tullab, a Malay handbook of Shafi'i law for judges, at her request.
