Chief of the Aws of Madinah, whose acceptance of Islam brought his whole clan with him; at his death the Throne of Allah shook.
Sa'd ibn Mu'adh was the chief of the Aws, one of the two great tribes of Madinah. He accepted Islam through the preaching of Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr before the Hijrah, then went to his clan, the Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal, and told them he would not speak to any of them until they believed; by evening the whole clan had accepted Islam. Before Badr, when the Prophet ﷺ sought the view of the Ansar, Sa'd answered that they would follow him even into the sea.
At the Battle of the Trench in 627 he was struck by an arrow in the arm. After the siege, the Banu Qurayza, who had broken their pact with the Muslims during it, agreed to accept his judgement, and he gave it. He died of his wound soon after. The Prophet ﷺ said that the Throne of the Most Merciful shook at the death of Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, and that seventy thousand angels attended his funeral.
