Reigned c. 1475–1518 CE
Rulers Demak Sultanate
Founder of Demak, the first Muslim kingdom on Java, with the support of the Wali Songo.
Javanese tradition makes Raden Patah a son of the last king of Majapahit and a princess of Chinese or Champa origin, raised in Palembang. He studied with Sunan Ampel in Surabaya and settled at Demak on the north coast of Java.
There he founded the first Muslim kingdom on the island, as the power of Hindu-Buddhist Majapahit faded. With the support of the Wali Songo the Great Mosque of Demak was built, and Demak became the centre from which Islam spread along the coasts of Java. Most of what is known of him comes from later babad chronicles, so his dates are uncertain.
