Rulers Aceh Sultanate
Aceh's greatest sultan, under whom it became a leading Muslim power and the 'Veranda of Makkah'.
Iskandar Muda ruled Aceh from 1607 to 1636, its age of greatest power. He brought most of Sumatra's coasts and the pepper ports of the peninsula, Pahang, Kedah and Perak, under Aceh, and in 1629 sent a great fleet against Portuguese Melaka, which was defeated.
His court was a centre of Islamic learning, with Shams al-Din al-Sumatrani as its leading scholar, and Aceh came to be called the 'Veranda of Makkah' as pilgrims embarked there for the Hajj. He is remembered as a strong and strict ruler, and as a national hero of Indonesia.
