Hadith Shafi'i Sufism Theology

Kurdish scholar of Madinah, master of hadith and Sufism, who wrote to guide his students from the Malay world.

Born in Shahrazur in Kurdistan, Ibrahim al-Kurani studied in Baghdad, Damascus and Cairo before settling in Madinah around 1651. There he became the closest disciple of Ahmad al-Qushashi and later succeeded him. He taught hadith, fiqh, theology and Sufism, and his chains of transmission (asanid) appear in the certificates of scholars across the Muslim world.

He took a close interest in the Jawi students from Southeast Asia. When a dispute about the teaching of the unity of being (wujudiyyah) troubled them, he wrote Ithaf al-Dhaki, a commentary on a short Sufi treatise widely read in the archipelago, to explain it with care. Among his students were 'Abd al-Ra'uf al-Singkili and Shaykh Yusuf al-Maqassari.
