Companions
Master reciter of the Quran and the teacher whose school shaped the jurisprudence of Kufa.
Ibn Mas'ud was a young shepherd in Makkah and one of the first to accept Islam. He is said to have been the first to recite the Quran aloud near the Ka'bah, for which he was beaten. He served the Prophet ﷺ closely, and the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever would like to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it as Ibn Umm 'Abd does.'
'Umar sent him to Kufa as a teacher and treasurer. His students there, such as 'Alqamah and al-Aswad, passed his legal method on to Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, Hammad and eventually Abu Hanifa, so his influence runs through the whole Hanafi school.
