Ibn al-Salah was a Kurdish scholar from Shahrazur who studied across Iraq and Khurasan and taught in Jerusalem and Damascus, where he led the famous Dar al-Hadith al-Ashrafiyyah.
His 'Ulum al-Hadith, known as Muqaddimat Ibn al-Salah, organised the terms and methods of hadith criticism into sixty-five topics. It became the standard textbook of the field, and al-Nawawi, Ibn Kathir, al-'Iraqi and Ibn Hajar all wrote abridgements or commentaries on it.
