Fiqh Hanafi

The last great authority of Hanafi law, author of Radd al-Muhtar.

Ibn 'Abidin was born in Damascus to a merchant family and memorised the Quran as a child. He first studied Shafi'i law and then, on his teacher's advice, turned to the Hanafi school, of which he became the foremost scholar of his age.

His Radd al-Muhtar 'ala al-Durr al-Mukhtar, known simply as Hashiyat Ibn 'Abidin, became the final reference for fatwas in the Hanafi school across the Ottoman lands, South Asia and beyond. He also wrote on how custom ('urf) shapes the application of legal rules.
