Companions
The 'Interpreter of the Quran', for whom the Prophet ﷺ prayed to be given understanding.
Ibn 'Abbas was the son of al-'Abbas and a cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, who was only about thirteen when the Prophet ﷺ passed away. The Prophet ﷺ embraced him and prayed: 'O Allah, give him understanding of the religion and teach him interpretation.' After the Prophet's death he sought knowledge from the senior Companions, sometimes waiting at their doors through the heat of the day.
'Umar included him in the council of the elders of Badr despite his youth. He became known as Tarjuman al-Quran, the Interpreter of the Quran, and as Hibr al-Ummah, the scholar of the community. His students in Makkah, such as Mujahid, 'Ikrimah and Sa'id ibn Jubayr, founded the Makkan school of tafsir.
