Sufism & Theology Hanafi Sufism
The master of Bukhara after whom the Naqshbandi order is named.
Baha' al-Din Muhammad lived near Bukhara and was trained in the path of the Khwajagan, the 'masters' of Central Asia. He emphasised silent remembrance of Allah (dhikr khafi) in the heart, strict following of the Sunnah, and 'solitude in the crowd': inner presence with Allah while living an ordinary life among people.
The Naqshbandiyyah, named after him, spread from Central Asia to India, the Ottoman lands and the Malay world, and it became one of the most influential Sufi orders.
