Rulers Aceh Sultanate
Founder of the Sultanate of Aceh, who drove the Portuguese from northern Sumatra.
Ali Mughayat Syah united the small states at the northern tip of Sumatra into the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam. Between about 1520 and 1524 he took Pedir and Pasai, driving out the Portuguese who had set up posts there after their capture of Melaka.
As Muslim traders turned away from Portuguese Melaka, Aceh became their port of call, and the kingdom he founded grew into the strongest Muslim power in the region. His gravestone in Banda Aceh is dated 936 AH (1530).
