One of the Ten Promised Paradise, the Prophet's cousin and 'disciple' (hawari).
Al-Zubayr was the son of Safiyyah, the Prophet's aunt, and he accepted Islam as a teenager. It is said he was the first to draw a sword in defence of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Every prophet has a disciple (hawari), and my disciple is al-Zubayr.' He married Asma' bint Abi Bakr, and he fought in all the major battles.
He was one of the six named by 'Umar to choose the next caliph. In the strife after the killing of 'Uthman, he withdrew from the Battle of the Camel and was killed on his way back. He is one of the Ten Promised Paradise.
