Hadith Shafi'i Fiqh
Prolific polymath of Mamluk Cairo, author of hundreds of works on hadith, Quran, law and Arabic.
Al-Suyuti was orphaned young and memorised the Quran by eight. He studied with many teachers in Cairo, including women scholars, and claimed the rank of a mujtahid in several sciences, which brought him into disputes with contemporaries.
At about forty he withdrew from public life to write, eventually producing several hundred works. They include al-Jami' al-Saghir, a large index of hadith, al-Itqan on the Quranic sciences, his completion of Tafsir al-Jalalayn, and al-Ashbah wa al-Naza'ir on Shafi'i legal maxims. His books are still widely read.
