الربيع بن سليمان المرادي

al-Rabi' al-Muradi (RH)

al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman al-Muradi

174–270 AH · 790–884 CE

Fiqh Shafi'i Hadith

Al-Shafi'i's student and the transmitter of al-Umm and al-Risala.

Al-Rabi' was the muezzin of the great mosque of al-Fustat and attached himself to al-Shafi'i throughout the imam's years in Egypt. He became the main transmitter of al-Shafi'i's 'new' writings, including Kitab al-Umm and al-Risala, and students travelled from far away to hear these books from him.

Al-Shafi'i is reported to have said that no one served him as al-Rabi' did. His long life, to 270 AH, made him a vital link between the imam and later generations.
