Sufism & Theology Sufism

'Master of the Sufi community', who taught a sober Sufism anchored in the Quran and Sunnah.

Al-Junayd was the nephew and student of Sari al-Saqati and also studied with al-Muhasibi. He learned Shafi'i law from Abu Thawr and was qualified to give legal rulings by the age of twenty.

He taught a 'sober' (sahw) form of Sufism in which spiritual experience is always measured against the Quran and Sunnah. He famously said: 'This knowledge of ours is bound by the Book and the Sunnah.' He was called Sayyid al-Ta'ifah, master of the community, and almost all later Sufi orders trace their chains of transmission through him.
