Indian scholar of Nadwat al-Ulama whose Arabic histories were read across the Muslim world.

Abul Hasan 'Ali Nadwi was born near Raebareli into a scholarly family; his father 'Abd al-Hayy al-Hasani wrote a great biographical dictionary of the scholars of India. He studied at Nadwat al-Ulama in Lucknow, and hadith and Quran commentary at Deoband and Lahore, and took the Sufi path with 'Abd al-Qadir Raipuri.

He taught at Nadwat al-Ulama and led it from 1961. Writing in fluent Arabic as well as Urdu, he became one of the most widely read Muslim authors of his century. His books include Madha Khasira al-'Alam bi-Inhitat al-Muslimin, on what the world lost through the decline of the Muslims, Rijal al-Fikr wa al-Da'wah, on the great reviving scholars of Islamic history, and a biography of the Prophet ﷺ.
