أبو أيوب الأنصاري
Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (RA)
Also known as: Abu Ayyub, Khalid ibn Zayd, Eyüp Sultan
c. 47 BH – 52 AH · c. 576–672 CE
Companions
The Ansari who hosted the Prophet ﷺ on his arrival in Madinah, buried by the walls of Constantinople.
Abu Ayyub, Khalid ibn Zayd, was of the Khazraj of Madinah and was present at the Second Pledge of 'Aqabah. When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, his camel knelt near Abu Ayyub's house, and the Prophet ﷺ stayed with him for several months while his mosque and rooms were built. Out of respect Abu Ayyub moved to the upper floor so that he would not be above the Prophet ﷺ, after first offering it to him.
He fought at Badr and in all the later battles, and he narrated a number of hadith. In old age he joined the campaign against Constantinople, fell ill, and asked to be buried as far into enemy land as the army could reach. He was buried by the walls of the city around 672. After the Ottoman conquest of 1453 a mosque was built over his tomb, at Eyüp in Istanbul, which remains one of the most visited sites in the city.
