The Hadrami master whose Ratib al-Haddad is recited across the Malay world and East Africa.
Imam al-Haddad lost his sight to smallpox as a small child but memorised the Quran and became the leading scholar and spiritual guide of the Ba 'Alawi sayyids of Tarim. He rarely left Hadramawt, but his letters and books reached far beyond it.
His Ratib al-Haddad, a short litany of Quranic verses and supplications, is recited daily in mosques and homes from Hadramawt to East Africa and throughout Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. His Risalat al-Mu'awanah and al-Nasa'ih al-Diniyyah are clear guides to sincere practice.
