عبد الرحمن بن عوف
'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf (RA)
Also known as: Abdul Rahman bin Auf
c. 42 BH – 32 AH · c. 581–652 CE
Companions
One of the Ten Promised Paradise, a merchant famous for his generosity.
'Abd al-Rahman was among the first eight people to accept Islam, through Abu Bakr. Arriving in Madinah with nothing, he was offered half the wealth of his Ansari brother Sa'd ibn al-Rabi'. He declined and asked only to be shown the market, and he became one of the richest Companions through trade.
He gave enormously in charity, equipping armies and freeing slaves. He fought at Badr and Uhud, where he was badly wounded. 'Umar named him to the council of six that chose the next caliph, and he managed the consultation that led to the choice of 'Uthman. He is one of the Ten Promised Paradise (al-'Asharah al-Mubashsharah).
