Sultan Iskandar Muda ruled Aceh from 1607 to 1636, its age of greatest power. Aceh controlled much of Sumatra's coasts and the pepper trade, fought the Portuguese at Melaka, and became a centre of Islamic learning known as the 'Veranda of Makkah', where Hamzah Fansuri's and Shams al-Din al-Sumatrani's teachings were followed.
